The months of the year in Spanish are:

The months of the year in Spanish

With the exception of “enero” (i.e., January), most of the months in Spanish are spelled similarly to their English counterparts and are therefore easily recognizable. This is because the months—in English, Spanish, and many other languages—are derived from Latin.

Are months capitalized in Spanish?

The months in Spanish do not have to be capitalized unless they are being used at the beginning of a sentence.

Examples: Capitalizing the months in Spanish

  • Voy a visitar mi abuela en abril.
    [I will visit my grandmother in April.]

Additionally, all the months in Spanish are considered masculine. Unlike the days of the week in Spanish, the use of “el” is not required before the name of the month. However, when specifying a date, “el” precedes the day (e.g., “el 8 de octubre”). It’s also acceptable to say “el mes de” which means “the month of.”

Months in Spanish are typically preceded by words like “este” (e.g., “este abril”) and “un” (e.g., “un marzo”).
