What is the MLA citation format?

The MLA style was created by the Modern Language Association and is often used to format papers in the English and humanities fields. An accurate MLA citation generator makes it much easier to cite sources in MLA style, which features the following:

  • Italics for book titles and container titles
  • In-text citations usually consisting of the author’s last name and the page number
  • Double spacing and a period at the end of each entry
  • Title case for titles of works
  • Inverted author names and “et al.” when there are more than two authors
  • The title of the work in place of the author name when there’s no author

MLA Citation Generator FAQs

The simplest way to create your Works Cited page is to use a free MLA citation generator online.

MLA style requires a list of source citations on a Works Cited page and corresponding in-text citations for each one.

MLA format requires (1) the MLA-style heading and title, (2) the body text, (3) in-text citations, and (4) the Works Cited page. An MLA format citation generator can help with two of these parts.

Like most style guides used for academic writing, MLA style recommends using a font that is easy to read and that clearly differentiates Roman and italic text, such as Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial.
