About QuillBot

In 2017, our founders wanted to find a way to help students still learning English improve their writing. Since then, QuillBot has evolved into an AI-powered writing platform that supports 35+ million people around the world.

Today, we infuse innovation into the writing process, so everyone who writes can achieve their full potential.

Our story

How does a student’s idea grow into an AI platform that helps improve billions of writing projects each year? With a team of 190 employees from around the world who are dedicated, innovative, and collaborative. Here’s everything we’ve accomplished so far.

2017
Born in a college dorm

Anil Jason wanted to create a tool that could help ELL students with writing. After enlisting his friends—Rohan Gupta and David Silin—they created QuillBot’s Paraphraser.

2018
Sparks start to fly

QuillBot almost immediately went viral on Reddit. Soon after, the trio entered into UIUC’s iVenture Accelerator and won initial funding.

2019
Boots on the ground

Based out of a small office in Chicago and running on donuts, the founders worked tirelessly to get QuillBot to its first major milestone: one million users.

April 2020
Making—and reaching—millions

As the number of active writers climbed to two million, QuillBot secured $4.25 million in funds.

May 2020
Broadening horizons

As QuillBot’s base grew, so did our aspirations. We wanted to be more than just a Paraphraser. So, we launched our second major tool—Summarizer—and started planning for more.

February 2021
More tools, more users

In 2021, QuillBot rolled out Grammar Checker. This smashing success—plus new languages, fresh modes, and more—brought us to a whopping six million users.

August 2021
Joining forces

Wanting more room to grow, QuillBot became a part of Learneo (previously Course Hero), a platform of like-minded businesses designed to supercharge productivity and learning.

March 2022
Scribbr teams up

Learneo acquired fast-growing start-up Scribbr out of the Netherlands to expand international reach and accelerate their mission of helping learners of all backgrounds succeed in the classroom.

April 2023
Willkommen LanguageTool

German start-up LanguageTool joined the Learneo family, bringing unique language and AI expertise to a growing writing vertical which has reached 56.9 million monthly active users across QuillBot, Scribbr, and now LanguageTool.

July 2024
QuillBot sets a new standard in AI detection

QuillBot launched an AI detector that clearly distinguishes between AI-generated text and text refined with AI tools, paving the way for the future of AI in the classroom.
