What is Blended Learning?

Blended learning is a hybrid of in-person and online learning.

The blended learning model is a great option because it accounts for all types of students. Some learners retain information better while sitting in a traditional classroom, and others learn better independently through the use of technology.

The in-person component allows students to receive personalized assistance and form connections with their instructors and peers, while the online-learning component allows for flexibility and education in different circumstances.

Components of blended learning

There are a few key indicators of a successful blended learning environment. The best blended learning program combines online educational materials with pencil-and-paper assignments.

In-person learning

Face-to-face instruction is important for student engagement. By learning in person, students are able to form connections with their peers, get meaningful help from their instructor, and do hands-on activities to help stimulate creative ideas.

Online learning

Online educational materials include video and audio elements, which can be interactive to engage students. Digital learning often allows students to work at their own pace, which works well for some learning styles.

In a “flipped classroom,” new information is given via the online learning portion of the class, and students apply what they’ve learned during the in-person portion.

A clear course plan

Because the blended learning approach promotes independent learning, students need to know exactly what they will be learning, what the intended outcomes are, and which parts of the class are in person versus online.

Student input

The blended learning method is fairly new, so students need time to get acclimated to a "flipped" classroom. Ideally, students would have a say in the pace of the class and the timing of the online learning components in order to maximize their abilities to learn.

Advantages of blended learning

Blended learning employs a few different educational methods, so there are advantages for every type of learner.

Supports all students

No matter what type of student you are, blended learning will be beneficial for you. Because blended learning is so flexible and fluid, students are able to find something in the course plan that speaks to the way they learn.

Independent learners will thrive during the online learning portions of the class, while hands-on learners will find that the in-person classes are perfect for their learning path. Students are also able to take their time on tasks, particularly during the online portions, which means students at different levels are able to concentrate and ask for help as they need it without feeling pressured by other students to get their work done ASAP.

Supports teachers

Many educators have to take time outside of the classroom to plan lessons, grade papers, and brainstorm ways to make class interactive. With the blended learning model, teachers can employ a learning management system, which is software that helps plan, implement, and track courses.

Learning management systems take a lot of pressure off of educators, so they can focus on helping students learn.
