What is a save the date?

A save the date is a message announcing an upcoming wedding date prior to the formal invitation. Generally, you’ll want to send the save the date card 6–12 months in advance. It’s traditionally sent via mail, but it can also be done virtually online via social media.

While a save the date card is most commonly associated with weddings, you can also send one for any type of celebration where you want to give advanced notice to those who are invited.
