What is stream of consciousness writing?

Stream of consciousness writing is a narrative style that presents a character’s thoughts and feelings as they naturally flow through the mind. It often uses long or fragmented sentences, loose punctuation, and sudden jumps between thoughts.

The term can also describe a free-writing exercise in which you write continuously. You don’t stop to edit or organize your thoughts. People use this exercise to overcome writer’s block, brainstorm, or journal.

Practice stream of consciousness writing with QuillBot’s AI Writer by asking it to “turn this scene into a character’s inner thoughts.”
