Is think-pair-share a formative assessment?
A think-pair-share activity can be a formative assessment depending on how it’s used. During a think-pair-share, students think about an answer to a question independently, discuss their answer with a partner, and share responses with the whole class. It becomes a formative assessment when the teacher:
- Circulates the classroom during the pair discussions to gauge how well each student understands the concept
- Considers each student’s progress while observing the “share” step
- Adjusts future lesson plans or provides 1:1 interventions based on those observations
