Lesson plan format

A lesson plan organizes all of the details about a lesson into separate sections with clear headings so that you have a clear visual reference while the lesson is in progress. The most common format includes the date, grade level, and academic subject along with headings for each part of the lesson to help you align instruction to students’ needs.

How to write a lesson plan step-by-step

With your template ready, you can start building your lesson. One of the most effective ways to plan a lesson is through a process called backward planning (or backward design). Instead of starting with classroom activities, backward design focuses on your end goals first: You plan the instruction only after establishing what your students need to achieve.

To use the backward design process, follow four main steps:

  1. Choose the standard and objective.
  2. Assess student readiness.
  3. Design the assessment.
  4. Plan the instructional procedure and materials.

Step 1: Choose the standard and objective

Start by reviewing the learning standards that the unit is targeting, choose one of those standards, and then select a specific skill or concept to cover in the lesson, which will be the lesson objective. The learning standards may come from your school district, your state’s education department, or a professional organization.

Choose an objective that’s achievable within a specific timeframe (e.g., one 50-minute class period) and directly related to the larger assessment that students will complete at the end of the unit, such as an exam, essay, or project.

Step 2: Assess student readiness

Next, review (or collect) data about your students’ current level of understanding to diagnose what they still need to learn in order to meet the goal. This data can come from standardized tests, homework assignments, writing samples, or observations.

For example, at the beginning of the unit, you might give a pretest or in-class writing prompt to diagnose students’ skill levels and identify the gaps to fill.

The process of gathering information about students’ readiness (or the activity you use for this purpose) is called formative assessment. The process of planning a lesson that aligns with students’ past performance is called data-driven instruction.

At this stage, also consider the different cultural backgrounds, learning preferences, and interests of your students, as well as any accommodations that you’re required to provide for students with documented disabilities, so that you can tailor the instruction and the learning materials to those needs.

Step 3: Design the assessment

Create or choose an assignment that students will complete at the end of the lesson to demonstrate what they learned. This assessment should directly measure the lesson objective rather than simply asking students to recall the information covered during instruction. As you’re making the assignment, ask yourself:

  • What criteria will I use to grade and evaluate students’ work?
  • What steps and strategies will lead to high-quality work?

The answers to these questions will help you choose the most relevant information and activities for the lesson.

Step 4: Plan the instructional procedure and materials

With a clear idea of what students already know and how you’ll assess learning, you’re ready to decide how to teach the content or skill and what materials are best for your students. The goal is to fill the gap between what students know now and what they should know when the lesson is over. The instructional procedure often includes three parts:

  • Introduction/warm-up to prepare students for the information, such as a quick writing prompt, discussion, game, or video clip
  • Direct instruction, where you demonstrate the skill and articulate the steps or thinking procedures that are involved
  • Guided practice, where students start practicing the skill while you help and observe (or in small groups where they can help each other)

If you’re creating worksheets or reading materials from scratch, tailor those to students’ learning levels (and other educational needs) as well.

Tip
As you grade students’ work after the lesson, look for patterns among individual learners and the whole class, and use this data to adjust future lesson plans. For example, you might reteach a concept to the whole class or meet with a student one-on-one.

  • Distribute hard copies of “Credible Sources Checklist” and review key criteria.
  • Display a search engine on the board and type the search phrase “Who built the ancient Egyptian pyramids?”
  • Open two sources (one credible archeological article and one unreliable conspiracy forum post).
  • Model how to go through the checklist step-by-step out loud, annotating key clues directly on the board while students observe.
Guided practice:

  • Open two additional sources from the same search results page and work through the checklist with student participation, asking volunteers to point out red flags or trust indicators.
  • Assign students work in pairs using their laptops to evaluate two assigned web links using their checklists.
  • Circulate the room, asking guiding questions, such as “Who published this article? What makes them an expert in ancient history?”

  • Have students turn and talk for 60 seconds.
  • Introduce the concept of volume as the amount of 3D space an object occupies, measured in cubic units.
Direct instruction:

  • Open an interactive 3D virtual manipulative app on the board. Click and drag virtual unit cubes to build a 3 x 2 x 4 prism on the display. Demonstrate that building the base layer requires 3 x 2 = 6 (Base area, B)
  • Invite a student to tap and stack 4 identical layers to complete the height (h). Count the total cubes (24) together to show that total units equal B x h.
  • Write directly on the board next to the model to connect the virtual cubes directly to the standard formulas:
    • V = length x width x height (V = l x w x h)
    • V = Base area x height (V = B x h)
    • Explicitly highlight on the board how the associative property applies: (3 x 2) x 4 = 3 x (2 x 4) = 24 units³.
Guided practice:

  • Distribute physical unit cubes and the “Package Designer” activity sheet to student pairs.
  • Ask pairs to construct a physical prism with a length of 5, width of 3, and height of 2. Have them write the base area on grid paper, calculate the total volume using both formulas, and verify their math by dismantling and counting their physical cubes.
Assessment Exit ticket with three word problems:

  • A wooden toy chest is 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 3 feet tall. What is the total volume of the toy chest?
  • A glass aquarium has a Base area of 30 square inches. If the height of the aquarium is 8 inches, what is its total volume?
